Why unbuffered?

Some magnesium sold as glycinate also contains magnesium oxide, listed in the medicinal ingredients. Ours is 100% unbuffered: one declared magnesium source, magnesium bisglycinate made with Albion TRAACS chelate, 121 mg of elemental magnesium across a two-capsule serving. The dose you read is the dose you get.

Run the math yourself

Reality Check Calculator

Plug in the numbers from any magnesium bisglycinate bottle. The calculator estimates how much chelate powder a stated elemental dose would take, so you know what to check in the ingredient list.

Capsule capacities are approximate and ingredient grades vary. This is an estimate, not a test of any product.

The Math That Tells the Truth

A capsule can only hold so much.

Here is an illustrative calculation using pure magnesium bisglycinate. Commercial ingredient grades and capsule fill vary.

Pure bisglycinate is mostly glycine.

14.1%

Pure magnesium bisglycinate is about 14.1% elemental magnesium by weight, and commercial grades vary. The rest is mostly glycine, so a meaningful elemental dose takes a lot of powder.

To deliver 200 mg elemental, you need…

1,418 mg

For pure magnesium bisglycinate, 200 mg ÷ 0.141 ≈ 1,418 mg of pure chelate. Commercial ingredient grades vary.

A capsule may hold about…

735 mg

For illustration, if one capsule holds about 735 mg of powder, 1,418 mg of pure chelate would need about two capsules. Actual capsule fill and ingredient grades vary. Check the medicinal ingredients to identify every magnesium source.

How to spot it

Flip your bottle. Three checks.

Turn over any magnesium product in your cupboard and check these three things on its label.

Read the medicinal ingredients.

If you see "magnesium oxide" listed alongside "magnesium bisglycinate," the product is buffered, and the magnesium is not all bisglycinate.

Check the per-capsule claim.

If a single standard capsule lists 150 mg or more of elemental magnesium, check the medicinal ingredients for a second magnesium source.

Read the non-medicinal ingredients too.

Read both the medicinal and non-medicinal ingredients. If a second magnesium compound is listed, check what the label says about each source.

Product details

How to take it

Recommended dose: Adults: take 2 capsules 1 time per day with food.

Storage and safety: Store in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing.

The capsule math

60.5 mg elemental magnesium per capsule × 2 capsules = 121 mg per serving. All from bisglycinate, no oxide buffer. A front-label number alone does not identify every magnesium source. Check the medicinal ingredients.

What's inside

One active ingredient: 100% Albion TRAACS magnesium bisglycinate. Non-medicinal: microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose (vegan capsule), magnesium stearate. No proprietary blend.

Not a fit if…

  • You want one giant capsule a day. Our 121 mg elemental is two smaller capsules, and to some people, two is one too many.
  • You only need 50 to 100 mg of elemental magnesium a day. Plenty of lower-dose products are perfectly fine.
  • You're shopping purely on price per capsule. Buffered products usually cost less, and we'd rather tell you that than compete on it.
  • You mainly want a magnesium for occasional regularity. That is not what this product is licensed for.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Why two capsules instead of one?

The licensed serving provides 121 mg of elemental magnesium in two capsules. Capsule fill and ingredient grades vary.

Is this buffered with magnesium oxide?

No. It’s 100% chelated bisglycinate. The elemental magnesium on the label comes entirely from the chelate. Never oxide.

How do I check my current magnesium?

Turn the bottle over. If “magnesium oxide” appears in the medicinal ingredients, the product is buffered and the magnesium is not all bisglycinate.

Bisglycinate vs. citrate vs. oxide?

Oxide, citrate and bisglycinate are different compounds with different elemental percentages. Human studies comparing their absorption are small and mixed, so we compare what a label can prove: the elemental amount and every magnesium source.

Is it Health Canada licensed?
