You are the hero the planet needs.

To the adventurers, explorers and athletes out there who want to help save the planet but feel hopeless or powerless: We hear you because we are you.

Reflecting on the past few years living with my family in a mountain town in British Columbia, we've seen heat records broken, friends houses lost to forest fires, and are wrapping up a winter season with historically low snowpack. With mountain bike season approaching, we are anticipating another tough summer. It has been weird to say the least. Is this the future I want for my 2-year old son? Not at all. I never thought that I'd have to tell him that we can't go outside today because the smoke is too bad but this seems to be what people are calling the "new normal".

Is there hope? It is hard to feel hopeful when it seems like us humans can't even agree on "Is climate change real?"

Here's the thing. I know that you care (you've read this far!) and I know that I care so we're not alone in our concern for the future. Let's take action and make what seems impossible possible. Can we stop what’s coming? Hopefully. If you and I and all our friends who give a shit work together — like actually work together on these hard things — I believe we can protect the places and activities we love. Freshfield is here to help you and I do the fun stuff and the hard stuff:  Adventure, explore and perform while radically lowering our impact on the planet for the sake of future generations.

Playing the Climate Game—Winning Together

Playing the Climate Game—Winning Together

Imagine the world as a big, complicated game. The players are countries, and the goal is to cut emissions and slow down climate change. But here’s the catch: not everyone plays by the same rules. Wealthier, oil-rich countries might be tempted to “cheat” by continuing to pollute while others scale back. This is where game theory comes in—it’s all about figuring out the rules that would lead to everyone winning by protecting our planet.

Turning the Tide on Ocean Plastic—A Story of Hope and Action

Our oceans are a source of wonder, teeming with life and beauty. Yet, they’ve also become a dumping ground for millions of tons of plastic waste. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive collection of plastic and debris floating between Hawaii and California, is a stark reminder of the issue. But here’s the good news: people around the world are coming together to protect our oceans, and their efforts are making a real difference.

Mining for Minerals—The Environmental Toll of Magnesium and Zinc Production

Mining for Minerals—The Environmental Toll of Magnesium and Zinc Production

Magnesium and zinc are vital components in a wide range of products, from dietary supplements and batteries to construction materials and cosmetics. However, the process of extracting these minerals from the earth is anything but benign. Mining operations often involve large-scale land disruption, significant water use, and the release of harmful pollutants into the environment. Moreover, the human cost of mining can be severe, with local communities facing displacement, health risks, and economic exploitation.
