The magnesium reality check

Magnesium glycinate. Flip the label.

The name on the front doesn't tell you everything inside. See how to read the full label, then meet our one-source formula: unbuffered bisglycinate, 121 mg elemental magnesium in two capsules.

  • 60.5 mg elemental magnesium per capsule
  • 121 mg across two capsules
  • No magnesium oxide in our formula

The trade-off, stated plainly

A smaller number. A clearer source.

Our two-capsule serving has 121 mg elemental magnesium. The illustrated 200 mg capsule has more in one. That's one extra capsule for a smaller elemental number, with one specified source on our label. It's not a promise about absorption.

  1. What we chose

Unbuffered Albion™ TRAACS™ bisglycinate supplies all the elemental magnesium in our formula. No oxide blend.

  2. What you give up

You take two capsules for 121 mg. If you want the largest elemental number in one capsule, ours isn't that.

  3. What we can't claim

This label doesn't measure absorption. We don't have a head-to-head finished-product study showing that you absorb more from our bottle.

Background: why the numbers vary

Read the human evidence in context

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body. The human absorption studies above differ in design, dose and population, so they do not settle one absorption rate per salt form.

Explore the Data

Try the optional label-math illustration below. Its capsule size and powder density are assumptions, not measurements of another bottle.

A generic label-math illustration

Does the big number fit?

See what an elemental-magnesium claim would require if it came from one form alone. Choose a dose and an illustrative capsule size; the result answers the math and then shows the single-source option Freshfield chose. This is not a test of another product’s composition or absorption.

Label details

Read the amount beside “Magnesium” in the Supplement Facts or Medicinal Ingredients panel. Type digits; a comma or a period works for decimals. Arrow keys nudge by one milligram.

Illustrative capsule size, not a fact about another brand

The capsule size and the powder density used here are illustrative ranges. No bottle was measured.

Theoretical composition only: real ingredient grades can assay differently. The percentages appear in the math below.

Generic size-00 example (0.9 mL, 0.6–1.0 g/mL), not based on any named bottle’s actual size or fill

Magnesium bisglycinate alone does not fit this example

Elemental per capsule 200 mg
Most bisglycinate could supply here 127 mg

At least 73 mg of elemental magnesium per capsule would have to come from another source under these assumptions.

200 mg from magnesium bisglycinate alone needs at least 1,418 mg powder, versus 900 mg total capacity at the assumed maximum density. This does not estimate the composition of any named product; no actual capsule size or fill was used.

Separate Freshfield product fact, not this estimate Want one stated magnesium source?

Freshfield uses unbuffered Albion™ TRAACS™ bisglycinate, with no oxide blend. Two capsules provide 121 mg elemental magnesium.

About the math and human evidence

Theoretical percentages use anhydrous chemical composition (bisglycinate 14.1%, citrate 16%, oxide 60%). Real ingredient grades can assay differently. Capsule sizes specify a volume; this example converts that volume to a powder-weight range with 0.6–1.0 g/mL. It includes no fillers, and it measures no product.

Human studies do not establish one absorption rate for either form, and none compares this finished product with another bottle. Schuette et al. (1994) found no significant overall fractional-absorption difference between chelate and oxide in 12 people with ileal resection, though a small impaired-absorption subgroup favoured chelate. Firoz and Graber (2001) estimated 4% fractional absorption from one commercial oxide preparation in normal volunteers. None of these results predicts an individual shopper’s absorption. Firoz and Graber, 2001 Schuette et al., 1994 Absorption review

For a formula that combines forms, read each magnesium ingredient on the label; this single-form estimate cannot determine a blend. Always check the serving instructions. No absorption rate and no health outcome can be inferred from this calculation. It is a label-reading illustration, not a test of another product’s composition or absorption, and not a verdict about any named bottle.

Illustration only. Theoretical composition, with an illustrative capsule size and powder density: no bottle was measured and no absorbed dose is estimated.

Not a fit if…

The trade-off is real. Pick the bottle that fits your routine.

  • You want the biggest elemental number in one capsule. Ours is 121 mg in a two-capsule serving.
  • You won't take two capsules a day. That's the serving on our label.
  • You buy on lowest price per capsule. Compare the serving size and full ingredient list as well as the price; ours may not be the lowest-priced.
  • You are looking to treat a health condition. This page is not medical advice; talk to a healthcare practitioner about any condition.
